A Sexy Bucket List

Most people think at some point or another about what they’d do if they knew they had a finite amount of time left. The elevator doors opened and she stepped into the sleek, leather-lined interior to admire, as she always did, the murals stamped into the skins. Done in a primitive, Mesolithic style and colored with a variety of bright dyes, they were a feast for the eyes. Unable to resist, she traced the figure directly before her, a half-man, half-jaguar she always assumed to be Xbal. Her finger trembled as it struck her she may very soon be touching the real thing, discovering and exploring what she’d only dreamed of up to this point. The lurch of her stomach had nothing to do with riding the elevator to the tenth floor but made the breath catch in her throat and a shiver course over her back and shoulders.

As the lift came to a smooth halt, she let her hand drop back to her side and took a deep breath, trying to put it all back into perspective. In a little while she may or may not be sleeping with a man she found entirely enthralling. In a short time she’d know whether or not this particular long-held dream would come true or not. Yet, as much as anticipation and trepidation crackled under her skin, and as exciting as the prospect of fucking Xbal was, it wouldn’t be a life-changing moment.

Strange how knowing the end of your existence was imminent gave one the kind of cutting clarity that would be beneficial if you had more time to make use of it.

Oh, Cassie, if only you knew. Perhaps if she’d thought about it a little more, she’d realize people don’t put something like this on a bucket list unless it has deep, deep meaning to them. She’s opening Pandora’s box by propositioning Xbal, and what lies ahead will indeed be that life-changing moment she so easily dismissed!

“We should walk and let the men discuss business. I have been told that there is a lovely path to the water from here; we could walk on the beach.”

I didn’t feel as though it was my place to tell her that a walk along the beach in the winter was not all that pleasant. Not much was lovely in the winter. I stood and went with her; if this was what Jennot wanted, I would not ruin it for him. Marie and I walked a ways in the cold before she said anything.

In your opinion, what makes a great hero?

In any type of story and in any type of situation, I want my heroes to react with integrity when they’re challenged to do the right thing. Even if he starts out as the most self-centered, self-serving creep on the planet, I want it to be their first gut reaction to be to step up and run into the face of danger. Bold fearlessness goes a long way with me.

Do you prefer strong women for heroines, or the ‘damsel in distress’ type?

You know, my first reaction to this question was “Ugh. Damsels.” And then I stopped to think about my stories and realize I write them quite a bit. I got a kick out of writing Bree in Cupid’s Choice because she’s sort of a reluctant damsel. She’s extremely independent for the most part—until she finds herself in a situation where she needs to be rescued, that is. And it was too much fun that she wasn’t especially thrilled about the hero on hand at the time.

Do you have anything in common with your characters?

I sneak a little something of myself into my characters here and there. I’m sure most writers do. Slipping in a belief here or a principle there not only adds another facet to the character, but it helps me, the writer, connect with them in a personal way. Especially if one of my characters has a vastly different personality from mine, which most of them do.

Having superficial things in common with them helps as well. Rachel from Key Party used to be a massage therapist on a cruise ship—when I was a massage therapist years ago I toyed with the idea of working on a cruise ship once my kids were grown and out of the house. ALL of my characters drink coffee—I can’t live without the stuff.

What item, or items, is absolutely necessary to your writing mojo?

I have a drawing of a hand with a finger pointing—think Uncle Sam and “I want YOU!”—that’s pinned to the corkboard above my desk. One of the writers in my Saturday morning group always points her finger at all of us when it’s time to stop chatting and start working. That drawing reminds me to get my butt in my chair and write, no excuses.

I also have a framed quote from Dita Von Teese that says “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches” that helps me keep things in perspective.

What’s the strangest (neatest, coolest, etc) thing you’ve ever done?
Back when my oldest was just a baby my husband and I stayed with friends at a cabin they had on a small lake up in Canada. We had to take a boat from a dock to the cabin itself. It had no running water or electricity and the outhouse was something out of a bad dream. (Seriously. The spiders that lived on the ceiling were the size of plums, I swear.) We ate fresh fish cooked on an open fire every night and bathed in the lake, and one night we got to see the Northern Lights, which were both eerie and spectacular. It was the most amazing vacation I’ve ever been on.

What are you currently working on, or what’s on the horizon?

I’m currently working on a short story to tie up one last loose end in the Mischievous Matchmaker series. I kind of left someone hanging, and I tried to tie his story up at the end of Luck of the Draw, I really did, but then someone twisted my arm and I *had* to write this last book. (Just kidding. She said she “would like to read” so-and-so’s story and I caved. I’m so easy.)

After that’s finished I’ll be getting back the series that has spun off last year’s Ink Lust.

I live in Northern NH, in my hometown. I have enjoyed reading and writing since I was a young child and wrote poetry since I can remember. Through my school years, I took every opportunity to take a literature or creative writing class. I worked in finance for 28+ years until Feb. 2012 when the company downsized and I lost my job. I write romance/erotica and at some point in the future want to try my hand at paranormal and adventure/action. My biggest inspiration is my sister Jennifer. She has stood behind me all the way and given me so much emotional support. Along with her, I have some amazing friends who I refer to as "my cheerleaders". Tall and broad, even though he was huddled down under his collar against the cold. Just the sight of him made her heart beat a little bit faster, her cheeks heat and the butterflies in her stomach go crazy. Her pulse thundered between her ears like a marching band. She hadn't seen him in five years--not since he'd walked out on her--but he was making her feel like a giddy teenager again.

Don't let him affect you like this, Charlotte chastised herself. She'd moved on with her life. The wound he'd left in her heart had finally healed.

The double doors opened and he stepped into the airport, moving to the side to let more people in from the frigid cold. He set down his luggage and unwound his scarf.

Damn, he still looks as good as ever. Charlotte had been kind of hoping Quinn's fast, career-driven lifestyle would've caught up with and aged him, but he looked as sexy and charming as ever.

The door closed with a click behind them and suddenly she was in his arms, her hands pressed over the fine silk of his vest and her body touching his from chest to knee. He held her tight to him, one arm around her waist and the other buried in her hair, angling her head so he could take her mouth in a long, deep kiss.

Her knees buckled when his tongue dove into her mouth. Pure, electric charges crackled and snapped through every one of her nerve endings as he groaned deeply and pulled her even closer. Her hands slid slowly over his chest and shoulders until they were buried in his thick black hair.

“Christ, Rachel,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to hers. “Seeing you naked the other night took my breath away, but you in a suit is… pornographic.”

She shivered despite the temperature rising in her body. “Ben.”

“I know.” He lifted his head. His eyes were dark, pupils dilated wide. “It’s completely inappropriate to drag you off and molest you when I should be sitting in on the next interview, but I couldn’t help myself.”

“Yes, inappropriate is a good word,” she agreed, finding it thrilling when he pulled back slightly to look her over top to toe again anyway.

She loved the way he made her feel delicate when he held her in his arms.
