My Take on A.J.'s Angel by L.A. Witt

I’m a L.A. Witt fan…let’s just get that out there. I like her style and the flow of her books and, most importantly, I like her characters. The situations they’re in read as realistic to me—I can totally believe their emotions and understand why they do the things they do.
So, already having read a couple of her books that I enjoyed, I couldn’t resist buying A.J.’s Angel. Here’s the blurb, so you understand why:

Tattoos fade with time. Emotions never lose their edge.
Luke Emerson is the last person Sebastian Wakefield expects to see strolling into his tattoo shop. But Luke’s not back after four years to take up where they left off. Not even to apologize for the cheating that broke them up.
Luke wants a custom tattoo, a memorial for someone known only as “A.J.”. Much as Seb would love to tell Luke to take his ink and shove it, he’s a professional. Plus, he’s reluctant to admit, he wouldn’t mind getting his hands on Luke again. Even if it’s just business.
Once Luke’s in the tattoo chair, though, Seb finds himself struggling with all the anger and resentment he thought he’d left behind—and those aren’t the only feelings reignited. Their relationship may have been turbulent, but it was also passionate. Four years clearly hasn’t been long enough for the embers of that fire to go cold.
A few subtle hints from Luke is all it takes to make Seb consider indulging in some of that physical passion. It shouldn’t be that tough to keep his emotions from getting tangled up in sweaty sheets.
After all, it’s not like he’s in love with Luke anymore. Right?
Product Warnings – Contains two exes who shouldn’t want each other like this, steamy ex-sex they shouldn’t be having, and a whole lot of ink.

Ex-lovers! Betrayal! The hints that what poor Seb thinks he feels may not be all there is to the story, even four years along. How could I resist?
I’m glad I didn’t.
As always, L.A.’s stories are equally as full of emotion as they are scorching hot. And one of the things I really like about them (and I don’t know if other readers feel this way) is that in the end, sometimes there aren’t any cut-and-dried answers as to why people do the things they do. I love getting lost in a fantasy world, but it’s the realistic touches that truly, for me, bring them to life. Sometimes people do stupid things for no good reason, then they have to deal with the fallout.
Seb’s internal dialog is spot on…that little voice that we all experience telling us, “Don’t fucking do it!” That little voice we all too often don’t listen to. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes bad, but I found myself shaking my head in sympathy as Seb battled with his tangled emotions.
To this point I haven’t met a L.A. Witt book I didn’t like, and A.J.’s Angel is no exception. If you like hot M/M romances with realistic situations and both heart and a few LOL moments, give A.J.’s Angel a read. You won’t be disappointed!

Foodie Friday--Food in Breaking Free

Do you ever wonder what characters would cook if they got into the kitchen? I sometimes do, because often I find I’ve written an entire book, or read an entire book, and the characters have been too busy doing…um…other stuff to actually make an entire meal. Strange, really, in the case of my own writing since I’m a devote foodie! With that in mind, Foodie Friday was born.
Sometimes it’ll just be a recipe I particularly like, or maybe some strange food fact I’ve come across. On occasion you’ll find a short story involving a character from my or other author’s books getting crazy in the kitchen. Foodie Friday is about the love of food, in all its forms, so come back often for a little taste!

This week I got to thinking about how food has been used in some of my books, what it says about the character’s thought patterns. Below is a scene from my Samhain Publishing release, Breaking Free, showing how my heroine Claire attempts to use food to set the hero Xavier at ease, but things don’t work out quite the way she expected. It’s a little longer than my usual posts, but I hope you enjoy it.

The doors at the end of the corridor stood open, light pouring out to pool on the passage floor. It surprised him for some reason, but no more than the transformed room itself.
The bed had been hung with deep blue velvet curtains which, closed, seemed to shut it off from the rest of the room. The wall next to it had also been draped in the rich fabric and he now wondered if it was there perhaps to conceal a window. Plush jewelled-toned rugs had been scattered about the room and flowers bloomed from vases set amongst candelabra, which cast a warm, golden light. Some of the furniture had been uncovered, a chest of drawers, end tables, two large overstuffed chairs. But there were also some strangely shaped objects pushed back against the wall, still covered and remaining hidden from view.
A fire blazed cheerfully in the fireplace and a large rug lay before the hearth, a comfortable distance from the flames. Set out on it was a feast. Xavier stepped further into the room, his hand going out to run lightly across the top of a cabinet, taking in the comfortable warmth of the atmosphere she had created. He turned to find her watching him and smiled his delight.
“This is wonderful.”
He sensed relief behind her answering smile and was amazed to realize his response meant so much to her. Preceding him to the picnic she lowered herself gracefully to the rug but he felt her watching him as he wandered slowly about the room. Running the velvet of the bed hangings through his fingers, touching the silky petal of a blood-red rose, he explored the space, orienting himself, absorbing the sensual atmosphere. Even stronger grew his feeling a metamorphosis was about to occur, and yet there was no fear, only curiosity and eagerness. Finally, he joined her on the rug and she gestured to the food.
“Please, help yourself.”
He turned his attention to it and found an interesting and tempting array of dishes, both savoury and sweet. Small puffs of filled pastry, thin slivers of ham and chicken on rounds of bread, a dish with pink prawns and another with oysters on the half shell, strawberries and grapes and rosy apples, sweetmeats and chocolates and tiny cakes all sat side-by-side. He was not sure where to begin, until his eyes fell on the silver bucket and the bottle within. Removing it, he poured glasses of the amber wine for them both.
As he handed her one of the crystal vessels she asked, “What did you do today?”
“Thought about you.”
She laughed and took a sip of wine, her eyes twinkling over the rim of the glass. “Surely not all day?”
Reaching for a grape and popping it into her mouth, she raised her eyebrows at him.
“Yes, all day—although I was able to get one or two other thoughts into my head in between.”
He ate one of the pastries as she shook her head at him. “Come now, Xavier, tell me what you did today. Start at the beginning.”
Taking a prawn, she gently nibbled at it, listening to his answer.
“I awoke thinking of you. Went for a ride in the park, hoping to see you walking there, and thought about you some more. Having spent the rest of the morning thinking about you, I repaired to my club for luncheon, where I thought about you some more.”
She was laughing, the sound making him grin in return.
“I understand, then, you spared me a passing thought throughout the day?”
“Oh, one or two, swiftly dismissed from my mind.”
Claire pouted, just a little, but her eyes sparkled mischievously. Did she think he was flattering her?
“I thought about you in my study, where by rights I should have been thinking about my business affairs but, realizing the futility of my efforts to concentrate, I went and spent the afternoon in the nursery, having tea and playing with my son.”
He reached for a grape, hesitated and then chose a plump strawberry from the platter instead. The deep red fruit would be beautiful against her peachy lips.
“Do you often spend the afternoon in the nursery?”
Her voice was soft and low, but when he looked at her, her eyes told him nothing, although a small smile still played about her lips. Using a paring knife to hull the berry, working precisely and gently, he kept the fruit firm and un-bruised, losing only one drop of juice, which oozed out along the blade of the knife.
“I have not, in the past. But today I decided I will be doing so more often in the future.”
“Why?”
The quiet intensity behind the single word made him almost afraid to look at her, although he could not fathom the reason for his reluctance. He raised his eyes long enough to offer her the berry, watched her lips open and receive the fruit, his groin tightening as it disappeared. Then he reached for an apple and began to pare it. When he glanced up at her again, she was watching his hands.

Claire awaited his reply to her query and watched, entranced, as Xavier’s long, nimble fingers turned the fruit, removing the skin in one long string with a series of smooth strokes.
“I would like to believe myself a ready pupil, and found myself thinking about the necessity of knowing oneself so as to be able to bring the greatest pleasure to others. It came to me it does not only have to refer to sensual pleasures but could also encompass simple ones too. My son, Quinton, means the world to me, and I would derive as much enjoyment from having him in my life as I possibly can.”
“Have you not done so before today?”
His fingers jerked slightly, severing the peel prematurely. Without hesitation, he picked up where he had left off.
“No, not really. I had as a model my own father who never came near the nursery unless forced or we needed to be punished. I made a habit of seeing Quinton for a little each afternoon, but never just to spend time and play with him.”
He sliced the end from the apple and then gently cut it in two and began to remove the core. Claire was glad his focus remained on the chore so he missed the way she blinked to push back tears.
“What did you play with him today?”
His smile was self-deprecating, eyes still intent on the fruit in his hand.
“He is only a baby, little more than a year old, and I must confess at first I was not sure what to do with him. But I quickly found he dictated the activities. Quinton seems to like to hear my voice, enjoys clapping his hands, riding horsy on my boot.” His smile widened, eyes far away, although he did not abandon the task at hand. “I believe he will be a fine horseman one day, his carriage was superb.”
She laughed breathlessly, the sound catching his attention and causing him to glance up. Suddenly there was a new air in the room, a darker, warmer breath moving along and into her skin, deepening her longing. He shifted, as though he felt it too.
“Go on.”
Her prompting brought him back to the present, but he continued to gaze at her for a moment more before continuing.
“I read to him when he became fussy and he dozed off in my lap. That is all.”
He held a piece of the apple out to her and Claire reached out her hand, placing it beneath his rather than taking the fruit. Slowly caressing, brushing his knuckles, she hooked her little finger on his, drawing his hand closer and closer to her lips.
“Eve offered Adam the fruit of the tree of knowledge, reputed to be an apple. How interesting you offer me the same, Xavier.”
He stared at their hands, and then raised his eyes, focusing on her lips. She allowed them to part slightly, as though ready to take the morsel. However, as the piece of apple came to her mouth, she licked it, using just the tip of her tongue. Opening her mouth a fraction more, she slowly ran her mouth along the fruit to his fingers. The first touch on his hand made him shiver. When she closed her lips over the side of his index finger, sliding down to the base and then insinuating her tongue between it and the middle one, he drew in a shuddering breath.
Claire watched him through her lashes, seeing the way his eyes darkened, listening to the roughness of his breathing. She had learned almost too much about him tonight for her peace of mind. How very much she wanted him now, at this very moment, while the tenderness of his voice as he spoke of his son still echoed in her ears. It was only too appropriate he offered her an apple, for the teacher had, to this point, learned as much as the student. But she would, should, must bring the balance of power back to centre.
“I have something to show you, Xavier, and I think you will like it.”

Reading, reading...loving every minute of it!

I've been blessed this past year, and one of the many great things that has happened to me is that I've found myself with the time and ability to read more. Time, because I have about an hour's commute three days a week and ability because I have an e-reader I can take with me on the bus! Unfortunately when I'm at home I find myself needed to work and sitting at my computer I feel as though I should be writing, so my e-published reading had diminished. Now, I'm buying more books and discovering a number of books and authors I'm excited about. Not to mention re-discovering favorites from before!

One of those favs is Mina Carter, who I discovered a while back but had sort of lost sight of. I liked her plotting style, character's snarky humour, kick-ass heroines, and just the flow of her work. When I saw she had a release with Samhain Publishing, Reaper, I was all over it like a cheap suit!

I was not disappointed.

It was a short book, but packed with action, heat and great characters. I really like the way she world- and character-builds. She gives enough information for you to understand what's happening without boring the socks off you with every minuscule detail. And, best of all, her heroine is the Reaper...what could be more kick-ass than Death?

I'm not a reviewer, so no rating from me. Just the honest opinion that if you like gritty, sexy reads, you may want to check this one out.

XXX Six Sentence Sunday!

This week my newest release, What the Mistress Did, came out from Samhain Publishing and I'm really excited.  I've had a couple of very nice reviews for it (one here) and am all set to work on the sequel during NaNoWriMo which both scares and excites me. It's been a few years since I participated in National Novel Writing Month and I know it's gonna be a haul. This is the busiest time of year for one of my day jobs (yeah, I have two LOL!) and I'm going to have to push to make it, but it'll be fun and productive, so I'm in. Lady Marianne Gillingham has further adventures to take part in, believe me!

This week, I'm giving you another little snippet of What the Mistress Did, and it's XXX, like most of the book. Hope you enjoy it, and please drop by some of the other participants in this week's Six Sentence Sunday.

Marianne is having an encounter with her lover, David, while his wife Annabelle watches from hiding.

Stepping to the side, I align myself so as to see his profile and tickle the crop over his arse. “Take your cock in your hand,” I command. “Stroke it. But do not spend, or I will send you away  immediately.”
David groans but does not hesitate, and as his fingers encircle the engorged flesh, I commence the flogging.
Oh, how the sheer carnality of it fires my blood.

Six Sentence Sunday!

Wow, the last week has flown by, and here we are, Sunday again. This week I thought I'd give a taste of my up-coming Samhain release, What the Mistress Did written under my erotica pen name, Anya Delvay. This was one of those books that almost wrote itself, and kept surprising me at each turn. I'm a pantser by nature, but recently I've been working with an outline, just so I don't write myself into a corner and have to waste time trying to figure out how to get out of it. With this book, the heroine, Lady Marianne Gillingham, went about her in search for lusty revenge, and took me along for the ride. I hope you enjoy the following, which happen to be the very first six sentences of the book!

Anya

Such a delectable morsel.
Standing in front of the fireplace, fingers knotted into the sides of her skirts, Miss Annabelle Frasier tries to stare me down. The generations of aristocracy in her lineage allow a credible effort, but it isn’t enough. No matter the careful styling of her wig into a powdered coiffure fit for a queen, the width of her panniers or richness of her accoutrements. To me she is a fledgling, sweetly young, trying wings not yet adult enough for the journey attempted.
The sight of her moves and angers me, stirring feelings I never imagined experiencing under such circumstances.

Six Sentence Sunday!

It's time for Six Sentence Sunday again, and I thought I'd continue to give a little taste of how Claire and Xavier's relationship develops in Breaking Free.

Xavier Westbourne would be a gentle lover, she thought, until passion overcame him. Then perhaps the beast dwelling in all men would come alive, taking over and driving him to roughness, releasing him from control, throwing them both towards and over the edge of passionate madness. She licked her parched lips, and was rewarded with a sound emanating from deep in his throat—the sound of the beast stirring. With another shiver, a delicious spasm of expectation suffused her entire body.
“Perhaps I shall, Mr. Westbourne.”
She pitched her voice only high enough to reach him, seeing him exhale, as though he had been holding his breath.

Six Sentence Sunday!

Hi All!

This is my first foray into SSS and I thought I'd start with a snippet from Breaking Free. Hope you enjoy it!

Leaning down towards her, his voice deepened slightly. “I came back for another reason as well.” He paused, brown velvet eyes sharp on her face, poised to catch any nuance of reaction. “Come to the opera with me tonight.”

Temptation in all its finery—resplendent, decadent, and to be resisted. Claire bit her lip to stop from giving in, saw the curve of his lips deepen into a near smile.

Anya Revealed...sort of

So, the ladies at The Long and Short of It asked if any of the Samhain erotic writers would be interested in being interviewed for their Whipped Cream Erotic Romance Review site, and I said yes. The questions were really fun, and I had a blast answering them, but when I realised they wanted a picture to go with the interview, I was stumped.

I don’t like having pictures taken. My driver’s licence could belong to a hardened criminal, the photo is so bad. My hair is in that in-between stage where there is nothing to be done with it except find ways to con it into believing it can behave. I hate studio portraits even more than candid...

...Okay, I think you get the gist.

Maybe one day I’ll be forced to give in and get a really nice picture taken of myself for publicity purposes. In the meantime, please meet Anya Avatar (top left), who will be standing in for me in any situation where my image is requested or needed. She’s the version of me I like to portray to the world...a little sassy, fun and smiling. Please note the red dress and shoes (it’s my favourite colour despite (or because of?) the fact my mother didn’t much care for it) and the hair that looks sort of stylish instead of just out-of-control!

My son was candid enough to point out I seem to have, um, exaggerated a few attributes (I’ll leave you to guess which) but I stuck my nose in the air and told him that was what artistic license was all about.

Damn these young know-it-alls. I hope I live to see him have a bunch of kids who are just like him!

The Samhellion Newsletter

For anyone who likes a little free stuff, you should sign up for The Samhellion, the Samhain writer’s newsletter. Every month it contains articles, free short stories, recipes and an interview with one of our host of interesting writers. The Samhellions are a fun group, and the newsletter reflects the diversity that makes Samhain one of the leaders (in my humble opinion, THE leader) in e-publishing.

And this is a great time to sign up for the newsletter. Over the past holiday season subscribers were given access to free shorts from 30 (yes, I said 30!) Samhain writers. The Freebies were so popular, they’re doing it again. In honour of Valentine’s Day there will be another 16 free shorts on offer, one per day, starting January 31st! Since the December holiday shorts are still available also, you’ll have 46 short stories, from sweet to super sexy, to enjoy.

My short, “Cupid Be Mine” will be released on February 1st, 2009, and I hope readers enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing it.

So, what are you waiting for? Go on…sign up! You can do that here

Rock On, E-Publishing

It’s an exciting time to be affiliated with a really good e-publishing firm. The world is changing, and publishing too is in the midst of a massive overhaul. Business as usual just isn’t cutting it anymore, and smart people are actively looking for new ways to publish and deliver books to the people who want them. I may be biased, but to me e-publishing, and companies like Samhain, are not just the wave of the future, they’re the wave of NOW.

I still have to put up with people saying things like, “Soon you’ll really be published,” although I’ve had the pleasure of two releases. It’s just ignorance, so I stifle my annoyance and tell them that I already am published, and leave it at that. Then I read an article like this one, in Time Magazine on-line, and realise irrespective of those views, I’m probably on the right track. Sure, it would be nice to be able to say I have a NY contract with Avon, or Berkley, or one of the traditional publishing houses. But there is a part of me that would rather not deal with issues like massive returns and bogus sales numbers.

Besides, there is news like Lorelei James topping the movers and shakers list at Kindle, which makes us romance writers know the readers are out there, and they’re following the trends. Instead of a book in every hand, how about an “E-reader in Every Hand” campaign?

And for all you readers interested in what the most popular books were at Samhain this past year, the best covers, etc. make sure you join us for the Sammie Awards! It’s gonna be a blast!
